Structure of the project

General structure

The work plan comprises five interlinked Work Packages (WPs).
  • WP1 focuses on the design, development and characterization of new dynamic epoxy-based thermally-responsive thermosetting matrices for repairable and de/remanufacturable CFRCs, in addition to targeting the production and testing of first-generation CFRCs based on such materials.
  • In WP2 the optimization of repairing and de/remanufacturing protocols for reuse of CFRCs, CFs and matrix are carried out and tested on second-generation CFRCs.
  • WP3 focuses on the definition of innovative circular business models based on the new concept of repairing and de/remanufacturing of CFRCs for reuse, including their environmental and techno-economic assessment. It provides continuous feedback to WP1 and WP2.
  • WP4 is devoted to the dissemination activities.
  • WP5 is dedicated to the management of the overall project.

WP1 - Thermally-responsive polymer matrices for CFRCs
(Leader: POLIMI)

This WP addresses all aspects related to the design, synthesis and characterization of suitable dynamic epoxy-based materials obtained by means of two different chemical strategies (D-A, vitrimers), to be employed as matrices in reusable CFRCs. The ultimate goal of this WP is to define suitable matrix materials with intrinsic repairability and recyclability functionalities, to be used in repairable, de/remanufacturable and reusable
CFRCs.

WP2 - CFRC repair and de/remanufacturing for reuse
(Leader: POLIMI)

This WP addresses the formulation, production and testing of repairable and de/remanufacturable CFRCs based on selected matrix materials resulting from WP1, including their technological and functional validation as well as their assessment by means of non-destructive inspection techniques. In addition, appropriate de/remanufacturing protocols is set up to achieve successful reuse of the CFRC part as well as recovery of both reinforcing CF and matrix material. The ultimate goal is to demonstrate the possibility to achieve complete reusability of CFRC components, fully in line with the principles of circular economy.

WP3 - New business models for remanufactured and repaired CFRCs
(Leader: STIIMA-CNR)

This WP aims at the definition of new sustainable business models for remanufactured and repaired CFRCs. The economic dimension and environmental advantage of the new technologies and materials developed in WP1 and WP2 are assessed. Potential market applications are identified for remanufactured and repaired CFRCs and possible return schemes are identified. Based on these preliminary activities and on an empirical analysis aimed at collecting industrial priorities and challenges, new business models are proposed for the industrial diffusion of new technologies and processes. Such business models outline the main product-services that is exchanged among supply chain actors, their business relationships, revenue models and reverse logistics processes that have to be implemented. The economic and environmental sustainability of the new business models are finally assessed through LCC and LCA techniques in order to provide companies and technology providers with performance targets for successful implementation.

WP4 - Dissemination
(Leader: POLIMI)

Dissemination of project results is one of the most important actions of COMPOSER and is carried out under the direct responsibility of a dedicated young researcher.

WP5 - Project management
(Leader: POLIMI)

This WP addresses all aspects related to the management and financial reporting of the whole project.
